One of the larger sellers has just sent me an article promoting, (very positively), a version of the Japanese marque, a 'divers' watch, with a black bezel, crown guards etc, which seems to be the usual 'copy', or homage to the Rolex Submariner. Grand Seiko was a rival to Rolex in the 1960s and 1970s, but only in Japan, because GS, and its counterpart King Seiko, were only available in Japan. But a major rival they were. Seiko, for example, came out with a quickset date about 10 years before Rolex, and a quickset Day-Date almost 20 years before Rolex.
I've narrowed down the search to the following models: Rolex OP 36 with Black Dial (2021 model): I like the simplicity and stealth. Grand Seiko SBGX261: I love the finishing, design and the quartz movement - it is satisfying to see the second hand hit the markers perfectly.

That being said: a Grand Seiko is better craftsmanship and easier to purchase, with arguably some of the best dials in the world. Rolex is more of a prestige purchase for many, but still holds its own in many facets. The Grand Seiko is a great watch. but I’d have to go for the Rolex. I’m not a huge fan of the GS styling and even if I’d have an extra 4K in the bank, I’d feel like I got a cheaper version of what I want.
